string공부를 하려면 이 책들이 왠지 필수일 것 같은 느낌!!

books for string theorists

A Listmania! list by "xiyin"(Cambridge, MA USA)
1.  String Theory, Vol. 1 : An Introduction to the Bosonic String (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics) by Joseph Polchinski
xiyin says:
"Despite many typos in the book, it is still the best introduction to string theory."

2.  String Theory, Vol. 2 : Superstring Theory and Beyond (Cambridge by Joseph Polchinski
xiyin says:
"No words need to be said about it."
3.  Foundations of Differential Geometry, Vol. 1 (Wiley Classics Library) by Shoshichi Kobayashi
xiyin says:
"A professional introduction to differential geometry."
4.  Algebraic Topology by Allen Hatcher
xiyin says:
 "Extremely clear."
5.  Principles of Algebraic Geometry by Phillip Griffiths
xiyin says:
"The best introduction of algebraic geometry to physicists - with emphasis on geometric pictures instead of abstract nonsense."
6.  An Introduction to Quantum Field Theory (Frontiers in Physics) by Michael E. Peskin
xiyin says:
"By far the best introductory book in quantum field theory."
7.  Conformal Field Theory (Graduate Texts in Contemporary Physics) by Philippe Di Francesco
xiyin says:
"Should be titled "everything you want to know or don't want to know about conformal field theory"."
8.  Noncommutative Geometry by Alain Connes
xiyin says:
"I have to admit that although this is quite an important book I don't find it useful in practice at all. And the perverse way of writing makes the book difficult to read."
9.  Characteristic Classes. (AM-76) by John Milnor
xiyin says:
"Nicely written and easy to read"
10.  A Concise Course in Algebraic Topology (Chicago Lectures in Mathematics) by J. P. May
xiyin says:
"You'll enjoy the book if you like the language of abstract nonsense"
11.  Geometry, Topology and Physics (Graduate Student Series in Physics) by M. Nakahara
xiyin says:
"Very readable. Some part of the book is not deep enough, a lot of hard analysis are ommited."
12.  Quantum Fields and Strings: A Course for Mathematicians by Pierre Deligne
xiyin says:
"A wonderful collection of lectures. For readers who already have a solid background in quantum field theory and love mathematical beauty."
13.  Aspects of Symmetry: Selected Erice Lectures by Sidney Coleman
xiyin says:
"One of the best texts of quantum field theory. The chapter on instantons is absolutely classic."
14.  Superstring Theory: Volume 1, Introduction (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics) by Michael B. Green
xiyin says:
 "Still quite useful."
15.  Superstring Theory: Volume 2, Loop Amplitudes, Anomalies and Phenomenology (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics) by Michael B. Green
xiyin says:
"The discussion on anomaly cancellation is in glory detail."
16.  Lie Groups Beyond an Introduction (Progress in Mathematics, Vol 140) by Anthony W. Knapp
xiyin says:
"I only took a look at it. Seems very nice. An honest string theorist should read this book, not Georgi's "mathematical literature""
17.  The Geometry of Four-Manifolds (Oxford Mathematical Monographs) by S. K. Donaldson
xiyin says:
"This book is a lot of fun to read."
18.  Algebraic Geometry (Graduate Texts in Mathematics) by Robin Hartshorne
xiyin says:
"Standard textbook for graduate algebraic geometry"
19.  Mirror Symmetry and Algebraic Geometry (Mathematical Surveys and Monographs) by David A. Cox
20.  The Quantum Theory of Fields, Vol. 3: Supersymmetry by Steven Weinberg
xiyin says:
"Weinberg is obssessed with indices and has no appreciation for mathematical beauty. And he dicusses supersymmetry using Majorana spinors. Even though one can still learn a lot form this book."
21.  Supersymmetry and Supergravity by Julius Wess
xiyin says:
"This is very basic, but everyone needs to go through the calculation at least once."
22.  D-Branes by Clifford V. Johnson
xiyin says:
"Clifford Johnson is a very good lecturer, and the Tasi lecture "D-brane primer" is well written."
23.  Mirror Symmetry II (Studies in Advanced Mathematics, Vol 1) by B. Greene
xiyin says:
"A collection of very important papers. Such books are becoming replaced by the arXiv."
24.  Mirror Symmetry III: Proceedings of the Conference on Complex Geometry and Mirror Symmetry, Montreal, 1995 (Ams/Ip Studies in Advanced Mathematics, V. 10) by Quebec) Conference on Complex Geometry and Mirror Symmetry (1995 : Montreal
25.  Gauge Fields and Strings (Contemporary Concepts in Physics) by Polyakov
xiyin says:
"This amusing book basicly consists of Polyakov's own work in the 70s."
