Optimisation of the reconstruction of supersymmetric particles in ATLAS

New particles are likely to be created in the unprecedented energies of LHC collisions. Many of the deficiencies of the Standard Model are solved in Supersymmetry(SUSY) at the expense of opening up a new zoo of elementary particles which can be detected in ATLAS. Different analysis strategies exist to reconstruct the properties of SUSY particles, exploiting different kinematics correlations between the particles produced in the collision. This summer student project is aimed at comparing and optimising the performance of different reconstruction methods using Monte Carlo generated events for which the ATLAS detector response has been simulated. The analysis focuses on events with two or more isolated leptons, a particularly promising discoverychannel in the hadronic coolision environment. The effects of finite detector resolutions on the discovery potential will be studied and translated into requirements on the alignment and calibration precision. The summer student will work with a team and employ an existing analysis framework which is written in Python and C++.

The projects offers a hands-on introduction to one of th emost spectacular topics in particle physics: the discovery of a parallel world which has so far escaped detection.

Supervisor는 Sebestian Schaetzel과 Andreas Hoecker라는데 잘 모르는 사람들이다. 일단 SUSY 관련되 ATLAS 쪽 project라서 재밌게 할 수 있을 것 같다. 현상론 관련된 공부도 조금 해볼 수 있을 것 같고. 그리고 무시무시한 프로그래밍을 열심히 하게 되겠군 ㅜㅜ
